Beatrix House & Brompton Library Frontage Renewal
Podium is providing Lead Designer and Principal Designer (BSA) services for the renewal of the shared frontage of Beatrix House, a residential block, with Brompton Library, occupying the ground floor of the building. Located within a conservation area in the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea, the design process requires a careful balance between delivering a high-quality aesthetic and managing cost effectiveness.
To date, our design services have included developing and submitting designs that align with conservation guidelines and local planning requirements.
The project has been subject to several design challenges including:
– ensuring the renewed frontage aligns with the historic and aesthetic sensitivities of the area.
– selecting durable and visually appealing materials that remain within budget constraints.
– the need to address a persistent issue where visitors mistakenly attempt to enter the residential block via the library entrance by creating a more distinct visual identity for each entrance.
– enhanced regulatory requirements due to the classification of Beatrix House as a Higher-Risk Building (HRB).
By addressing these challenges and through thoughtful and strategic design, the project will not only enhance the visual appeal and functionality of the shared frontage but also improve wayfinding, ensuring that visitors to Brompton Library no longer confuse the residential entrance with the library’s entryway. The combination of high-quality, affordable materials and a design that respects the conservation area will ensure a sustainable and lasting improvement for all users.
We are pleased to have provided excellent Lead Designer services for this project thus far. The forthcoming design stages will further showcase Podium’s role as Principal Designer (BSA), enabling us to streamline processes to ensure compliance with all relevant regulations while delivering a design that meets both aesthetic and practical needs.
