Peters Village, Wouldham, Kent
Town & Country Housing
Peters Village is a new 1,000-home community created beside the River Medway. Supported by Homes England, the development includes new homes for outright sale and affordable housing, available for shared ownership and affordable rent. The new homes are provided by some of the UK’s leading property developers. When fully completed, Peters Village will have its own shops, medical centre, school, and village hall with changing rooms to serve the area’s playing fields.
Podium Surveying was appointed as Employer’s Agent by Town & Country Housing on a Section 106 Agreement with Vistry Homes on one parcel of land. This agreement sees 24 new general needs, affordable homes delivered for Town & Country Housing. The 24 units comprise 22 two- and three-bedroom houses and two coach houses.
The site has a rich history, with evidence of significant habitation dating back to Neolithic times and the Bronze Age and the Peters family setting up what became the Peters Lime and Cement Works in the 1850s. The old works became home to various light industries and businesses in recent times. Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council’s Local Plan identified the brownfield site as ideal for housing and approved Trenport’s proposals for a new village and bridge in 2006. Delayed then by the economic downturn, sections of Peters Village are now completed, with further land parcels being developed and ongoing. Part of the land at Peters Village is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) managed by a partnership between site developer Trenport, the Government-backed Natural England and Kent Wildlife Trust.
In 2020, Peters Village received a prestigious accolade at the First Time Buyer (FTB) readers’ awards. The 1,000-home community was ‘Highly Commended’ in the Best New Development (South), which recognised sites offering “an exceptional range of new homes that stand out from the crowd whilst remaining accessible for first-time buyers.”
The new affordable homes at Peters Village for Town & County Housing add to their 9,500 affordable homes across 15 local authority areas in Kent and Sussex. In addition to general needs homes, Town & County Housing offer a wide range of housing, including key worker, shared ownership, and specialist accommodation, including a women’s refuge, housing for people with learning and physical disabilities, and a hostel for ex-offenders.
