RICS Building Conference 2018

There are exciting times ahead for Technology and the Building Surveying profession, and below are a couple of ‘takeaways’ that Podium’s Zena Turay came away with from this year’s RICS Building Surveying conference.

Takeaway # 1 – Mobile Data Capture

The presentation by Trident on mobile data capture was indeed captivating. The demonstration given on the effectiveness of 3D building surveys was an eye opener, showing how building defects can be captured and displayed. Initial thoughts are gone of the days of tediously producing  Schedule of Conditions for Party Wall projects – using this technology will ensure a quicker delivery of data to the client and will be key in generating more business.

Takeaway # 2 – Fire safety

The Building defects workshop presented by Trevor Rushton was a presentation I was keen to hear. Fire safety in buildings should always be at the forefront of every designer but unfortunately the tragic Grenfell Tower fire in June 2017 revealed otherwise. The revision of building regulations and its interpretation, Fire testing of building materials will be central in preventing such a tragedy from happening again in the UK.
